There are those who say the world is a recorder...It never forgets
Frank Roscoe is on death row for the murder of his wife and daughter. He is approached by a secret society to be given a get-out-of-jail card if he takes part in a time travel experiment. However, during the experiment he dies, and wakes up in his own “consciousness hard drive”, where he discovers all of his past lives are collectively stored. Never remembering the murder of his family, Frank is given the chance to see the murders played out and discovers that his former employer, mafia boss Mickey, orchestrated the whole thing. Mickey framed him after Frank botched an assassination of Dr. Suzuki, a scientist who was on the verge of inventing a machine that had the ability to travel between different lifetimes.
Given the choice of wanting to exact revenge, Frank reincarnates and wakes up in dystopian New York in the year 2040 as Lao - a ruthless Chinese assassin. Through a series of “accidents”, Mickey, who is now running for Senator of New York (but who really wants world domination) hires Lao to eliminate his rival Roger Chartoff who’s running against Mickey. Lao tracks Roger’s every move but starts to develop feelings for him since she has dreams that they knew each other in their past life. After their relationship gets deeper, Lao confesses that she was hired to assassinate him. Frustrated, Mickey hires another assassin to do the job, but Lao saves Roger and they escape together to the outskirts of the city to Dr. Koichi Suzuki’s house. Koichi is the son of Dr. Suzuki and continues to experiment with his Father’s research but fails to find any answers. As Lao gets closer to Chartoff she has revelations from her past life of the formula, which she eventually discovers and gives to Suzuki to help complete the machine.
Lao volunteers to use the machine to go back and become Frank again in order to eliminate Mickey before it’s too late. Frank rekindles the relationship with his wife and daughter and eventually kills Mickey but finds he cannot change what has already happened. He goes to the secret society and discovers that there have been 12 beings that reincarnate into different forms since the beginning of time that vowed to take control over the souls of all human beings when the right technology arrived in order to gain immortality. Lao returns and convinces Lisa, Mickey’s wife, to let her into their home so she can murder him.
Lao gains access into Mickey’s home, but it’s too late, he’s become immortal and has activated a machine that allows him full control over the souls of all human beings. Lao decides to go into the machine and through a “revolving door of incarnations” they battle throughout history, however, Mickey murders Lao and eventually goes to take over New York City and the rest of the U.S.
Lao wakes up the limbo of souls, where she meets a group of other people who train her to become “attuned” and to make her gain insight into the true nature of the world. With her new attuned sense and a new weapon that was forged to eliminate human souls, she must now go back throughout history and destroy the other 11 people who have vowed to take control of the world in order to restore peace.
The rest of the series takes place over the major points of history while using mythological stories as a basis for Frank/Lao to try to change the course of events and restore balance to the world.

弗兰克 罗斯科因谋杀妻女，在死囚牢房服刑。一个秘密组织接近弗兰克，有意捞他出狱，条件是弗兰克同意参加时空穿越实验。但坐在实验中，他意外死亡，又在自己的“意识硬盘”中醒来，发现他所有的前世都存在硬盘中。弗兰克从不记得杀害过自己的家人，他在“硬盘”中看到了谋杀的回放，发现这一切都是前雇主，也就是黑帮老大米奇导演策划的。铃木嘉是一位科学家，他的时空穿梭机马上就要做成了。米奇派弗兰克暗杀铃木嘉，但弗兰克搞砸了暗杀任务。米奇为此报复陷害弗兰克。
弗兰克执意选择报仇，于是他在一个1984反乌托邦式的世界中重生，化身冷酷的中国杀手小牢。而此时的米奇正在竞选纽约州参议员（他真正想要做的是统治世界）。在一系列的阴差阳错后，米奇雇小牢去消灭自己的竞争对手罗杰 查特夫。小牢监视着罗杰的一举一动，可却渐渐对他心生情愫，后来甚至向他坦白自己受雇要杀掉罗杰。米奇又再次安排暗杀罗杰的行动，但小牢一直在保护查特夫，二人逃到了铃木光一在市郊的家中。光一是著名科学家铃木嘉的儿子，继承了父亲的事业，但研究一直没有成功。小牢与查特夫的关系越来越近，她前世看到的一个方程式也越来越清晰地出现在脑海中。最终，小牢记起了完整的方程式，并分享给铃木光一，帮他完成了时空穿梭机。
小牢自愿试用穿梭机回到过去，再次成为弗兰克，希望能及时除掉米奇。弗兰克重拾与妻女的感情，最终杀掉了米奇。但他却发现已经发生的事情，是无法改变的。弗兰克找到了秘密组织，发现有12人自时间开始的那一刻就不断地重生，变换形态，等待着技术成熟。他们誓要控制所有人类的灵魂，以达到永生。她穿越回现实，劝说米奇的妻子丽萨让小牢进到米奇家里除掉他。
小牢进到米奇家中，可是太晚了，他已经成为不死之身，并启动能够控制所有人类灵魂的机器。小牢决定进入机器，通过“重生旋转门”，与米奇在历史中对抗。但米奇杀掉了小牢，最终统治了纽约城和美国其他区域。
小牢唤醒了灵薄狱里的灵魂，在那里她遇到了一众高人，得道并获得了洞察世界本真的能力。有了新的感知力和清除12人灵魂的武器，小牢必须要回到历史中，除掉其他11名誓言统治世界的人。只有这样，才能重建和平。
后续发展基于神话故事，在历史的各个重要节点发生。弗兰克（小牢）试图改变事件的发展，重建世界平衡。
